India and Pakistan have historically been geopolitical rivals. Their disputes have been exacerbated over water related issues. In 1960, the two nations signed the India Pak treaty. This treaty distributed the rights to several rivers flowing between the two nations.
Recently, Pakistan has claimed that India has violated the India Pak treaty by constructing a dam on the Jehlum river. The treaty designated controls of the river to Pakistan. This newly constructed dam significantly decreased the volume of water flowing into Pakistan. In response, Pakistan has begun retaliatory construction projects to limit water flowing into India. |
